In a nation often weighed down by deep religious, ethnic and political fault lines, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has reminded Nigerians that unity and peaceful coexistence remain the country’s most urgent assignment.
Reviewing a new book on the life and leadership of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Bishop Kukah described Nigeria as “complex, fragile, yet full of promise,” urging Muslims and Christians to see themselves not as rivals but as partners in nation-building.
According to the outspoken cleric and public intellectual, no meaningful progress can take place unless leaders and citizens alike embrace tolerance, justice and shared humanity.
It was a message that set the tone for the unveiling of “Fintiri: The Man They Could Not Stop,” a political biography that chronicles the governor’s rise against fierce opposition and the battles that shaped his administration.
While Kukah focused on the soul of the nation, Governor Fintiri turned attention to faith and service.
Speaking at the event, the governor attributed his political victories and survival through intense opposition to divine grace, describing himself as “a child of destiny.”
He said leadership must never be reduced to personal gain or self-interest but seen as a call to serve humanity.
The governor’s remarks were echoed by fellow political heavyweights who commended his stewardship of Adamawa State.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State praised Fintiri’s resilience and results-driven approach, describing his administration as one that has remained focused despite political pressures.
Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in his keynote address, also called on political leaders across the country to emulate Fintiri’s model of governance, urging them to place people above politics and performance above rhetoric.
Together, the voices at the event painted a picture of a leader forged by struggle but defined by service — a theme that runs through the book authored by seasoned journalist Solomon Kumangar.
Beyond a mere biography, the publication presents Fintiri’s journey as a study in perseverance within Nigeria’s turbulent political terrain, detailing the resistance he faced and the reforms that marked his time in office.
Yet, above the politics and praise, it was Kukah’s cautionary note that lingered most — that Nigeria’s future depends less on personalities and more on unity, justice and peaceful coexistence.
In the end, the story of “the man they could not stop” became something broader: a reflection on the kind of leadership Nigeria desperately needs..
